Dorance Scholars Entrepreneurship Program
July 2011
The 5th Annual Dorrance Scholars Entrepreneurship Program will begin on July 11, 2011. The program will conclude with a public poster session and project presentations on August 2, 2011 from 12pm to 5pm in McClelland Hall, Room 208. This innovative program is sponsored by the Dorrance Scholarship Program and the Arizona Community Foundation and is hosted by the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship in the Eller College of Management at the University of Arizona. Dorrance Scholars are first generation college students from the state of Arizona. The scholars attend any of the three public universities and pursue programs of study in a wide range of disciplinary fields. There will 23 students participating in the 2011 Dorrance Scholars Entrepreneurship Program.
The Entrepreneurship Program provides Dorrance Scholars with the opportunity to develop innovative models and entrepreneurial strategies for creating sustainable social, economic, and/or ecologocial change within their communities, academic disciplines, and professional fields. Scholars in past years have developed innovative models and entrepreneurial strategies for advancing fair trade practices involving Navajo artisans, music and fine arts education in Arizona, conservation programs within American colleges and universities, and community health outreach initiatives within colleges of medicine.
Furthermore, the curriculum and overall experience promotes the development and enhancement of leadership and communication skills, critical thinking capacities, and research abilities. Guest lectures and field site visits across Southern Arizona introduce the scholars to a diverse set of entrepreneurial and innovative community leaders.
